2026 Korea Drone Combat Challenge: MND Opens National Competition

The South Korean Ministry of National Defense (MND) has launched the 2026 Republic of Korea Drone Combat Challenge (대한민국 드론공방전), a national-level competition designed to accelerate defense drone development and foster synergy between the military and domestic drone industry.

Competition Details

Venue: Army Seungjin Training Ground, Pocheon, Gyeonggi Province.

Registration: March 4–31, 2026. Open to defense companies, startups, and research institutes.

Scope: Attack drones, reconnaissance UAS, counter-drone systems, and autonomous swarm technologies.

Tactical Significance

The competition reflects the ROK military’s urgency to build domestic drone capabilities following the “500,000 Drone Warriors” initiative. With concerns over the military’s current reliance on Chinese-made commercial drones, this event serves as both a technology showcase and a pathway for Korean defense SMEs to demonstrate indigenous alternatives. Successful competitors may gain fast-track access to military procurement programs.
