When cell towers can’t reach, drones fly above the problem
High-Altitude Platform Stations (HAPS)
Airbus Zephyr, SoftBank HAPSMobile, and Skydweller Aero operate solar-powered drones at 60,000-70,000 feet for months at a time. These ‘stratospheric satellites’ provide 5G/LTE coverage over 200km diameter — bridging the gap between ground towers and orbital satellites.
Disaster Communications
After hurricanes, earthquakes, and floods, ground communication infrastructure fails. AT&T’s drone-based Cell on Wings (COW) and T-Mobile’s Starlink integration provide emergency connectivity within hours.
Rural Connectivity
3.7 billion people lack reliable internet. HAPS drones can provide broadband to areas where building cell towers is economically impossible. Facebook (now Meta) abandoned their Aquila project, but the concept lives on with more practical implementations.
