Salisbury’s Doorknob: How One Drop of Novichok Exposed Every CBRN Defense Gap NATO Has
It persisted for three months. It killed a civilian. And every CBRN doctrine it exposed still hasn’t been fixed.
March 4, 2018: The Attack That Changed Everything
On March 4, 2018, Russian intelligence officers applied Novichok — a nerve agent roughly 5–10 times more toxic than VX — to the door handle of Sergei Skripal’s home in Salisbury, England. The attack hospitalized Skripal and his daughter Yulia. Three months later, Dawn Sturgess — a civilian with no intelligence connection — found a discarded perfume bottle containing the same Novichok and died after applying it to her wrist. She was the attack’s second victim, collateral of contamination that had persisted, undetected and unmarked, for 83 days.
The Salisbury attack was not primarily a tactical event — it was a CBRN doctrine stress test. It exposed, in a NATO member state’s civilian environment, every gap that military planners had assumed would only manifest in battlefield scenarios: detection delay, contamination mapping failure, secondary exposure from persistent agents, and decontamination certification gaps that left civilian areas operationally uncleared for weeks.
The Five Doctrine Failures Salisbury Documented
1. Detection Took Hours, Not Minutes. First responders who attended the Skripals were themselves contaminated because no rapid chemical agent identification was available on-scene. Proper agent identification took 3+ hours. 4. Decontamination Certification Failed. Areas were declared clean, then found to be re-contaminated. The lack of a verified, immutable certification record meant clearance decisions could not be audited or challenged.
